How did it start?
In early March DJ Adept from the Global Sect Music label reached out to me regarding producing a party together in Novi Sad, Serbia in June. We’ve been partners with Global Sect for more than 10 years now and it sounded like an awesome idea – to catch up offline and to do something cool together.
Who was responsible for what?
Global Sect Music, DharmaR and Jungle Island would provide the artists, promotion and venue and I will be responsible for the decorations for the dance-floor and for the DJ-stage. Mystic Spores collection was about to be released later in spring so I thought this party will be an awesome opportunity to expand the collection, to add a bunch of new designs and to test them in real life.
Creating new designs
Since the main artwork for the collection was already completed it took us only a few days to create new designs for UV-Triangles that were supposed to form a hexagram for the dance-floor. We decided that for the DJ-stage we will be using a bunch of different UV-Petals for the sides, Sporelino UV-Hexagon for the front and FOA album cover created by artists from the Global Sect for the back.
The location
Borisov Atelje is a small ground for open air parties that is just outside an old fortress of Novi Sad. A very picturesque and private location that is very easy to access from Novi Sad and it is relatively easy to come to from Belgrade. The owner of this outdoor club is familiar with ravers even though he doesn’t look like one so it was a great location to do a party at.
Dealing with customs
Last year when Putin started this awful war with Ukraine we had to move the production of our decorations from Russia to the US. Luckily our partners from Glowtronics did a few prototypes earlier in 2022. It took them a few months to catch up with the quality we had before with our partners in Russia but as of today (July 15 2023) we are confident in the quality of our US partners :) So we ordered a couple of boxes of lycra an mesh decorations to ship from the US to Serbia. Truth be told Serbian customs turned out to be some of the worst ones. It looked like they didn’t know how to tax us but with the help of some people from the customs (thanks to Global Sect who found an insider) and from Serbian FedEx we managed to pay the right ammount of tax and to get our stuff about a week before the event.
Putting up the decorations
Luckily there were no events at the venue the day before our party so we decided to take it easy and to start putting everything up in advance without rushing the process. DJ Adept met Stevan and Alexandra sometime ago and guys agreed to join our decorators team + there was another volunteer Miroslav who was also helping us on the first day of mounting. Unfortunately it rained every now and then but we managed to put up the canopy. We had to change the layout of the canopy because the original hexagram didn’t fit the dance-floor.
The day after we came back to Borisov Atelje and completed the stage decoration with the help from Ana and Relja. Guys from the Global Sect have also put giant uv-reactive backdrops on a wall of the fortress.
During the party
The party turned out to be a successful one! We had Ka-Sol as a headliner and a number of local DJs. The crowd was almost twice bigger than we expected and luckily everything went super smooth except for one girl who started to feel not very well but she recovered within an hour or so without leaving the party.
In the morning
Taking down the decor obviously took a lot less time than putting it up. Maybe an hour or an hour and a half. And we also spent some time picking up the trash. I still don’t know if the guys who own the venue wanted us to do it but I felt like cleaning won’t hurt and it will benefit our relationship with the owners.
Next events with this decoration
As I am writing this a part of our decorators team is preparing for a party in Macedonia – Babuna RETRO Gathering. I can’t wait to see how guys will put up the decoration! It’s one thing to have a decoration layout plan and a totally different thing how everything will unfold in reality. And after the decor comes back to Serbia I will take it to Germany to Waldfrieden’s Wonderland in August!
